Existential Warnings

Geoffrey Irving, a former OpenAI and Google DeepMind employee, stated in an interview that the probability of human extinction resembles a coin flip. This perspective forms part of a collection of video interviews featuring researchers from leading labs including OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, compiled by the nonprofit Palisade Research.

AI researchers put out videos saying superintelligence is ‘exactly as dangerous as it sounds’

The published video series captures industry insiders expressing serious concerns regarding advanced artificial intelligence development.

Assessing the Risks

Multiple researchers echoed concerns about potential human extinction scenarios. Neel Nanda, a research scientist at Google DeepMind, estimated at least a 10 percent probability that advanced AI could trigger human extinction, characterizing that figure as exceptionally high. While these statements highlight severe risks, the discussions do not present a unified regulatory or technical solution.

Daniel Kokotajlo, a former OpenAI researcher, described superintelligent AI systems as possessing god-like power while noting that current control methodologies are inadequate. He emphasized that the situation presents profound dangers that require prevention.

Industry Motivations and Skepticism

The project includes commentary addressing commercial hype and personal motivations. Google's Mary Phuong acknowledged that public skepticism regarding lab-funded perspectives is warranted. Meanwhile, Nanda explained that he continues his work because he believes it directly mitigates existential threats, noting that individual departures would not halt industry development.
