Nolla Health Launches AI Acne Prescriptions in Utah

People in Utah can now use AI to get a prescription for acne treatment. Healthcare startup Nolla Health announced that users in the state can scan their faces using its app, allowing its AI system to analyze acne severity and autonomously write a prescription.

Utah has approved Nolla Health's AI system to scan a user's face and directly issue prescriptions.

Phased Physician Oversight for AI Prescriptions

The service is launching as a pilot program with gradually loosening physician oversight. Initially, two physicians will approve each AI-generated prescription for the first 100 patients. This will transition to reviewing prescriptions only after they are issued for up to 500 patients. Subsequently, physicians will review a sample of at least 10% of prescriptions monthly, in addition to every case involving an escalation or side effect.

First AI System for Initial Prescriptions

While other healthcare companies are experimenting with AI-generated prescriptions in Utah, Nolla Health states it is the first in the country to issue initial prescriptions, rather than renewals. The company emphasizes that the pilot is designed to complement physicians, not replace them, by handling routine, low-acuity cases and allowing dermatologists to focus on complex patients.

Program Eligibility and Treatment Scope

The program costs $4.99 per month and is available only to Utah residents aged 18 or older with mild-to-moderate acne. Nolla Health will direct users to a physician if its AI system cannot confidently select a treatment. The AI can currently prescribe eight different skin treatments.
