Virtual Try-On Launch

OpenAI has introduced new shopping capabilities for its conversational assistant, ChatGPT, featuring a virtual try-on tool for clothing and accessories alongside a product saving function.

The release comes as AI developers continue testing consumer-focused shopping applications. Previous retail initiatives by various tech entities have included experimental instant checkout options and proactive product recommendation models.

The shopping features rely on the ChatGPT Images 2.5 model, which aims to deliver improved lighting, realistic textures, more precise edit execution, and reduced generation latency.

How Virtual Try-On Works

Users can utilize virtual try-on by uploading a selfie or full-body photograph to observe how specific garments or accessories appear on them. The option is accessible via a Try On button within shopping results, or by uploading an external image, such as a screenshot, for visualization.

Additionally, a Favorites function allows users to store discovered items in an in-app library alongside their generated try-on images for future reference.

Expanded Shopping Assistance

According to the company, ChatGPT supports additional shopping workflows.

Users can describe a desired style to find matching pieces or upload photographs of celebrity outfits to locate commercially available equivalents.

These capabilities position the assistant in a market segment historically dominated by visual discovery platforms like Pinterest and search engines like Google.

Market adoption will depend on user preference, particularly as competitors such as Google have offered virtual try-on solutions for some time.
