Gemini Automated Calling

Google is launching a new feature called “Call for Me,” allowing Gemini to make phone calls to businesses on a user's behalf.

The feature will initially roll out experimentally to Pixel 11 owners in the U.S. who subscribe to Gemini. It also requires using the beta version of the Google Phone app for Android.

Unlike previous calling tools, Gemini can share approved personal information during calls, enabling the system to execute a wider array of actions.

Real-Time Monitoring

Users can monitor calls in real time and take over the conversation whenever necessary. Calls are dialed directly from the user's personal phone number.

The AI is designed to manage tasks such as checking product inventory, making restaurant reservations, rescheduling appointments, or placing items on hold.

Gemini can introduce itself, navigate automated phone trees, wait on hold, and converse with human representatives while users track the progress through a live transcript.

Evolution of AI Calling

This launch builds upon years of automated calling experiments developed by Google.

Earlier iterations included demonstrations of Google Assistant booking reservations with conversational nuances, as well as features like Hold for Me and Talk to a Live Rep.

Last year, Google introduced Ask for Me, allowing Gemini to inquire about pricing and services, alongside tools for navigating interactive voice response systems.

Google stated that the experiment is starting on a small scale to account for the nuances of real-world conversations before expanding more broadly.
