Google AI Policy for Schools

Google announced that it plans to disable AI tools for K-12 students unless school administrators explicitly turn them on. The company states the change follows consultations with schools, teachers, researchers, and policymakers, resulting in a revised approach across Gemini, NotebookLM, Gemini in Classroom, and Google Search.

The decision means that schools choosing to restrict AI altogether will no longer be able to access Google Search, as AI features are now integrated into the search engine.

Search and AI Integration

Chris Phillips, vice president for education at Google, stated that search and AI are deeply integrated, meaning that if a school chooses to restrict AI altogether, students will not have access to search and will see a message from their school indicating it is unavailable.

The change presents a challenge for educational institutions. While educators may want to limit AI Overviews for certain assignments, they typically rely on the search engine itself for research and source discovery.

Because Google Search and its AI capabilities are inseparable, schools utilizing Chromebooks and Google's suite of apps must accept the AI features to retain access to the search engine.

Google indicated it will share more specifics with schools ahead of the changes to prepare administrators for the transition, with the stated goal of providing school leaders control over AI usage in classrooms.

Guided Learning Launch

The announcement coincides with the rollout of Guided Learning in schools, an AI tool designed to function as a tutor that helps users build understanding rather than merely supplying direct answers.
