Workforce Restructuring

Microsoft is offering voluntary buyouts to up to 60,000 employees across the US, UK, Canada, and India. In internal communications, the company stated this provides staff members with financial support and career planning resources as it looks to adjust staffing levels.

Microsoft Offers Buyouts to 60,000 Employees

The buyout offer reaches a significant portion of Microsoft's workforce, which totals approximately 223,000 employees.

Department Eligibility

Staffers across various divisions are eligible for the voluntary exit offers, including those in AI experiences, Copilot, CoreAI, Windows and Devices, Xbox, finance, and human resources teams. Cloud and AI units, MicrosoftAI teams, and corporate, external, and legal affairs are partially participating. Meanwhile, employees on marketing, commercial business, discovery and quantum, and security teams are excluded.

The voluntary exit offers follow previous reductions that impacted Xbox and commercial sales teams.

This voluntary exit program differs from previous retirement offerings targeted at long-serving employees based on specific age and service thresholds.

Corporate leadership noted that the program represents a new approach for the organization, designed to meet varying business needs while supporting workforce transitions.

According to internal documentation, the current offers are not based on age, length of service, or performance metrics, though additional exit programs may be considered based on future business needs.
