Reclaiming Mac Storage

Mac users looking to recover storage space can utilize a new open-source command line utility named RemoveMacAI to eliminate Apple’s built-in artificial intelligence features. While older macOS versions featured a straightforward settings toggle to disable Apple Intelligence entirely, newer software updates split these functions across multiple panes and leave foundational models stored locally on the drive.

Tool Functionality

The utility effectively automates the deactivation process, shutting down integrated artificial intelligence services, purging local model files, and preventing the operating system from downloading them again.

According to the creator, managing these capabilities manually requires navigating numerous settings menus, some of which are located under Screen Time. Even when disabled manually, foundational models can occupy roughly 12GB of storage.

The software deactivates Siri, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, ChatGPT extensions, and various summary features while clearing out the associated model files.

Reversibility and System Impact

The modifications are designed to persist through software updates, and basic features like Dictation remain functional. A built-in revert command allows users to restore the features and re-download the models if desired.

While the creator notes that the AI components consume about 12GB by default, total storage consumption can vary significantly depending on usage and system configurations. The command line utility includes a status command to inspect the exact footprint of individual model components.
