Interactive Plugin Interfaces
OpenAI is expanding its AI platform to target external applications with new plugin extensions designed to integrate directly into the ChatGPT ecosystem.
During a developer presentation, the organization announced that creators can now build customized app-like experiences within ChatGPT using these extensions.
While previous integrations connected ChatGPT to external tools like Slack and Google Drive, the updated extensions provide applications with a dedicated home in the sidebar.
Developer Tools and Discovery
Developers can now construct interactive panels enabling users to interact directly with external tools while conversing with the chatbot, alongside support for proprietary file formats.
To streamline adoption, OpenAI introduced a Plugin Creator tool alongside a redesigned directory submission process featuring clearer developer feedback.
The platform updates also improve directory ranking algorithms and conversation-based recommendations, while granting users granular control over data access permissions.
Hosting and Automations
Additionally, lightweight websites created through ChatGPT Sites can host these plugins, allowing users to share custom applications with colleagues operating on connected data permissions.
OpenAI is also incorporating support for the proposed MCP Events specification, permitting plugins to initiate automated workflows driven by triggers from connected applications.
