Introduction to Dots

At OpenAI’s Dev Day event, the company announced the launch of Dots, a new personal agentic assistant powered by GPT-6 Astra. The company describes Dots as remarkably capable, always-on agents built to handle diverse tasks.

Unlike traditional interfaces, Dots are designed to operate independently of specific hardware or interfaces, pursuing user-defined goals continuously in the background with minimal oversight.

Users can start with a primary dot, assign a name, and customize it. Over time, the platform envisions teams of Dots working collaboratively on behalf of the user.

Availability and Use Cases

Dots will be available for Pro and Business Premium users in eligible markets, accessible through Codex and ChatGPT interfaces.

OpenAI highlights multiple deployment scenarios for Dots. A software developer might deploy a dedicated dot to monitor customer feedback and implement bug fixes, while a scientist could employ a dot to rerun analysis and investigate experimental data.

Integration and Persona

Users can communicate with Dots through workplace platforms such as Slack and Teams, with standard text message support scheduled for future release.

Specialist Dots can be provisioned with specific identities, credentials, and tools. OpenAI is collaborating with Microsoft to integrate these assistants into enterprise security controls.

While similar agentic capabilities existed previously through developer harnesses, Dots bundles these features into a package focused on autonomous actions.

The platform utilizes a cartoonish, floating persona to make the software more approachable and relatable to users.
