Introduction to Shopify Canvas

Shopify introduced a new site-building tool called Canvas that lets merchants set up their Shopify store by chatting with artificial intelligence. While Shopify previously offered a no-code builder involving modular section rearrangement, deeper customizations traditionally required editing code or hiring a developer.

With Canvas, merchants can converse directly with Shopify’s AI agent, Sidekick, to construct their site. As the AI implements changes, Canvas displays the results in real time, allowing merchants to observe the overall store layout or zoom in on specific details.

Real-Time Rendering and Functionality

Rather than a static preview, the platform renders the actual underlying code of the store. This enables merchants to test page interactivity, animations, and responsive layouts across different screen sizes. Sidekick also captures screenshots of the interface to maintain visual context as updates occur.

The release aligns with an industry-wide shift toward conversational and AI-driven web development, joining similar tools from platforms like Wix, Squarespace, Webflow, and Framer, alongside various vibe-coding environments.

Merchants retain the ability to manually select and modify individual elements, though conversational instructions via Sidekick serve as the primary interaction method.

Integration with Sidekick AI

Sidekick has previously been utilized for writing code, building applications, and customizing themes. Canvas integrates these capabilities into a comprehensive site-building interface where users can manipulate the store's actual files while navigating the visual workspace.

To facilitate this workflow, Shopify granted Sidekick direct access to theme files and simplified the underlying architecture, making the store structure, logic, and design easier for the AI to interpret and modify.

Limitations and Future Roadmap

As an early-stage product, Canvas currently lacks certain features such as third-party theme support, app blocks, market extensions, translations, and desktop-only constraints. Shopify plans to introduce support for these capabilities in future updates.

Over time, matured iterations of Canvas could lower barriers for entrepreneurs who lack dedicated development budgets or programming experience.
