Custom Feeds Overview
YouTube is introducing a new feature called custom feeds that allows users to describe, in their own words, the kinds of videos they would like the platform to recommend.
To create one, a user types a description of the desired feed into a prompt box. This can range from a feed dedicated to a specific interest to options tailored for a particular mood or duration, such as video podcasts for a commute or relaxing commentary.

Gemini AI Integration
The prompt-based feature leverages Google’s Gemini AI model to build the feed around the request. The resulting feed is pinned to the top of the YouTube home page in its own tab, and can incorporate detailed instructions regarding what to feature, prioritize, or exclude.
This addition follows similar developments across various social networks and media platforms that let users shape their recommendation systems using natural language descriptions.
Platforms like Bluesky, Meta’s Threads, Instagram, X, and Spotify have previously implemented or tested similar AI-powered feed-building tools.

Availability and Scope
YouTube believes these custom feeds will help users navigate the millions of videos hosted on the platform more effectively.
Company executives noted that the vast corpus of content on the platform makes targeted curation tools necessary for discovery beyond standard search functions.
The new custom feeds will not replace the main default recommendation feed, but will instead exist alongside it as optional tabs.
Support for creating multiple custom feeds is scheduled to roll out across the web and mobile versions of YouTube.
