The AI-Designed WASP Firearm

Gun rights activist Cody Wilson, known for creating the world's first 3D-printed firearm over a decade ago, has unveiled a new creation he claims is the first AI-made gun. Dubbed the WASP, the weapon is 3D-printed and was designed by an artificial intelligence model named GatGPT.

The report describes the WASP as a pistol barrel attached to a spring-loaded plastic box that closely resembles another 3D-printed, single-shot weapon made by Wilson known as Liberator. The weapon features an unconventional design and a strange grip.

Custom AI Gunsmith Model

Wilson claims to have created a custom AI gunsmith model called GatGPT. The model has been trained on DEFCAD's digital gun file library and can assist creators in selecting parts for their builds.

The development marks a shift in the proliferation of ghost guns, which lack serial numbers and are difficult to track. The WASP was designed through conversational prompts with the AI model, fires real bullets, and does not contain a serial number.

Lowering Technical Barriers

While 3D-printed firearms previously required technical expertise, a custom AI model bridges that knowledge gap. Mainstream AI services like Google Gemini typically refuse to provide instructions or details regarding the creation of 3D-printed firearms.

Regulatory Challenges

Lawmakers are attempting to address the evolving issue through ongoing court battles and state legislation. California recently sued a 3D printer filament company for marketing to the 3D-printed gun community, and a federal judge previously struck down an ATF ruling regulating conversion part kits.

The 3D-printed firearm market has advanced significantly, with authorities prosecuting illegal manufacturing operations and lowering production costs. AI assistance could further democratize the process for anyone with a 3D printer.

Experts have criticized the WASP for its unusual design and potential AI hallucinations, such as an unfinished trigger guard. However, Wilson anticipates that the AI's design capabilities will improve over time.
