Atari VCS Platform Retirement
Atari is officially retiring its hybrid VCS console-PC, originally released in 2021. The company has announced the closure of the Atari VCS software store, scheduled for early next year. To ensure the longevity of the Linux-based, AMD APU-powered hardware, Atari will release an OS update that removes dependencies on its infrastructure for authentication and software. Additionally, an Atari Homebrew App will be provided to allow users to build and add games independently.
Users can continue to add software to their libraries via the official store until January 31, 2027. The store will officially close on February 1, 2027. Following this date, the planned OS update will allow for the migration of all functionality to local machines, marking the end of official platform support.
The Atari Homebrew app will be made available to all users during the transition period. This tool enables developers to continue creating and sharing applications for the VCS, and allows players to add software to their consoles without relying on the official storefront.
What was the Atari VCS (2021)?
The modern VCS featured a design inspired by the classic Atari 2600. Internally, it utilized an AMD Ryzen Embedded R1606 APU with a 2C/4T CPU and Vega 3 integrated graphics. The system shipped with 8GB of DDR4 RAM and 32GB of eMMC storage, both of which were user-upgradable via SODIMM and an M.2 SATA SSD slot. Connectivity included Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI 2.0, and four USB 3.1 ports.
While the device was capable of running Windows, Linux, or Chrome OS, it was sold with a custom Debian-based Linux distribution. This OS provided access to a library of 100 classic games, a retro-styled store, and various streaming applications.
At launch, the VCS faced criticism regarding its $399 price point, interface performance, and hardware noise. Modern alternatives, such as budget mini PCs, often offer superior performance and storage capacity for a similar or lower price, making the VCS a niche device for enthusiasts of the brand.
