Massive Codebase Overhaul
Cisco president and chief product officer Jeetu Patel has appointed a 27-year-old former startup founder to refactor 98% of the company's legacy code within a 24-month timeframe, breaking conventional corporate restructuring patterns.
The engineer, Padmanabhan Krishnamurthy, joined Cisco following the company's acquisition of translation startup EzDubs in 2023. Patel noted that Krishnamurthy had previously been underutilized within the broader organization.
During a discussion at Cisco's San Francisco office, Krishnamurthy proposed that a team of just two people could rewrite the company's extensive legacy codebase using advanced AI tooling.
Unlimited Resources and Proof of Concept
Following the discussion, Krishnamurthy received a four-week proof of concept window and unlimited AI compute tokens to execute the ambitious software modernization project.
Industry Risks and Infrastructure Demands
The rapid expansion of AI-assisted coding has placed significant strain on developer infrastructure globally, though widespread industry adoption continues alongside ongoing concerns regarding autonomous software agent reliability.
Corporate Culture and Innovation
Patel aims to source more young engineers capable of challenging existing enterprise norms and injecting fresh perspectives into legacy product development cycles.
The executive emphasized that traditional corporate hierarchies often suppress disruptive thinking, making early-career talent crucial for driving operational evolution.
While integrating newer employees alongside long-tenured staff inevitably creates organizational friction, leadership views healthy debate over ideas as a vital component of technical progress.
Cisco plans to combine experienced enterprise scale operators with external AI-native entrepreneurs to achieve maximum efficiency across future software deployments.
