Overview of the Custom Power Mod

A hardware modder known as DallasGrave has showcased a custom quad 8-pin power conversion kit designed for the 16-pin power connector and the later 12V-2x6 revision to reduce the risk of power-related meltdowns on high-end graphics cards.

Unlike standard aftermarket adapters, this direct-mount kit sits above the graphics card and uses a custom harness soldered to the PCB power rails. The setup bypasses the 16-pin connection and redistributes power evenly across four conventional 8-pin PCIe power connectors.

Load Distribution and Electrical Specs

Each 8-pin PCIe power connector can deliver up to 150W, matching the 16-pin connector's maximum 600W capacity when combined. However, this configuration addresses design concerns where the 16-pin connector channels massive current through a small set of pins, whereas the larger 8-pin connectors offer a wider pin pitch.

While 8-pin connectors are not entirely immune to failure, 16-pin connectors are significantly more compact, carry four times the wattage, and are therefore more prone to high current density and heat buildup.

According to PCI-SIG specifications, each of the six power pins inside the 16-pin connector is rated for a maximum current of 9.5A, bringing total capacity up to 684W or 57A. Operating at 600W requires each power pin to carry about 8.33A, pushing close to recommended safety limits.

In contrast, four standard 8-pin connectors provide 12 power pins. Distributing a 50A load across 12 pins means each pin carries just 4.17 amps, roughly half the current of the 16-pin design, which significantly reduces wire and terminal temperatures.

Testing and Availability

The conversion kit tricks the sense pins on the 16-pin connection into recognizing the full 600W, though the creator claims to have tested it for up to 800W with a shunt mod. It can operate as a standalone power source or alongside the native connector as a parallel load spreader.

The developer is currently designing a custom backplate to enhance the kit's visual appeal and plans to release versions compatible with various market variants, including Nvidia Founders Edition cards. Key details such as release date, pricing, and installation specifics have not yet been disclosed.
