Wi-Fi 8 Hardware Development
The Wi-Fi 8 specification has not been officially ratified by the IEEE yet, but manufacturers are already developing supported hardware. GFiber announced that it will soon offer its own branded Wi-Fi 8 Premium Gateway designed specifically for its 20 Gig fiber customers.
Qualcomm, GFiber, and Gemtek revealed that the new gateway will leverage the Qualcomm Dragonwing NPro A8 Elite Platform. The platform combines a penta-core CPU and an NPU to maximize performance for connected devices across residential networks.
Edge AI Integration
According to Qualcomm executives, the platform integrates Wi-Fi 8 connectivity, high-performance networking, and native edge AI into a single architecture. It utilizes an open agentic AI framework intended to provide a flexible foundation for deploying and scaling agentic AI directly on the gateway device.
Availability and Rollout
Gemtek will manufacture the gateway hardware, while GFiber confirmed that subscribers currently using its 25G-PON-based 20 Gig service will be the first to receive the upgrade. These customers currently utilize an Actiontec Wi-Fi 7 gateway and will transition to the Wi-Fi 8 hardware following the completion of the certification process.
Although product imagery has not been fully released, the gateway is expected to feature an updated aesthetic designed to encourage prominent placement in the home to optimize wireless signal propagation.
While 20 Gig connections remain uncommon, GFiber continues to expand infrastructure plans. The provider stated that its upcoming 50 Gig residential trials, powered by 50G-PON technology, will also be fully supported by the Wi-Fi 8 gateway architecture.
