Hardware Upgrades
Microsoft is updating its lowest-end computers: the 13-inch Surface Laptop and 12-inch Surface Pro. Both systems are getting the Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Plus processor, including an 80 TOPS NPU, upgrading from the first-generation Snapdragon X Plus.
Both devices are scheduled to launch on October 13. The Laptop will start at $1,199, while the Surface Pro will be priced at $1,149, marking increases over the previous versions which started at $899 and $799 respectively.
Performance and Efficiency
Microsoft claims the new hardware is 17% faster in Microsoft Office workloads, up to 18% more efficient on battery, offers over 60% faster graphics, and delivers up to 95% faster AI inferencing on the NPU compared to previous-generation Snapdragon X Plus processors.
The updated systems feature a new black color option and displays that are 25% brighter than previous generations. The 12-inch Pro will also receive optional 5G connectivity on enterprise configurations.
The Surface Pro introduces Ink Canvas, a new sketching and annotating application for Windows 11. It comes preinstalled on the tablet and will also become available for other Surface and supported Windows 11 devices through the Microsoft Store.
Accessories
Alongside the new computers, Microsoft announced a $79.99 Surface Mouse featuring haptic feedback. This takes advantage of native Windows 11 features that allow haptic responses for user interface interactions such as resizing windows or hovering over elements.
The new mouse is designed for ambidextrous use, connects via Bluetooth 6.0, runs on two AAA batteries, and is offered in black and platinum finishes. It launches on October 13 alongside the new laptops.
