Apple will reportedly run diagnostics on returned iPhones without opening the packaging

The company's Presto technology already facilitates contactless software updates on boxed devices.

Apple will soon no longer need to physically unpack iPhones before evaluating returns, according to reports. The company is leveraging its Presto iOS upgrade systems to perform diagnostics on returned devices while still sealed in their boxes, helping retail staff combat theft and reduce warehouse repackaging overhead.

Retail Efficiency

When customers return a sealed iPhone, retail employees typically must open the packaging to verify functionality before issuing a refund. Thieves frequently attempt to return stolen phones or parts in resealed boxes. Once opened, the device can no longer be sold as brand new, requiring shipment to a warehouse for re-boxing.

Apple initially introduced the Presto machine to update software on retail inventory boxes prior to purchase. By repurposing this hardware to scan sealed returns and run diagnostics, staff can verify device integrity, process refunds efficiently, and return functional units directly to inventory.

Future hardware announcements from the company are expected at upcoming product events.
