Smart Home Camera Concept

Apple’s rumored push into smart home tech could include a smart home security camera that only gives users text event descriptions instead of video footage. Reports indicate the camera will be part of a new Apple smart home ecosystem, alongside a rumored smart home hub.

Apple’s reportedly developing a smart home camera that doesn’t record video

With Apple rumored to launch a smart home hub, it could come with a privacy-protecting security camera too.

Privacy and On-Device AI

Development efforts include home security products, featuring a companion device to the rumored smart home display. These cylindrical cameras feature low frame rates and do not record video. Instead, they act as sensors that analyze the environment within and around the home entirely using AI.

The camera utilizes technology similar to what Apple has reportedly developed for rumored AirPods equipped with cameras.

Using an image sensor with embedded AI that processes data on-device can eliminate the need to pass and store sensitive images. Apple Home currently features a "Detect Activity" setting for HomeKit Secure Video cameras that suspends video streaming and recording while continuing to track motion.

The upcoming device is expected to feature facial recognition for detecting when individuals enter a room, providing users strictly with text descriptions rather than any form of video recording.
