Introduction
If you go a little out of your way, you can make Google Docs much easier on the eyes.
Introduction
Google Docs is an incredibly convenient application, and it receives constant support and updates. Recently, Google has brought Gemini-powered content creation tools and AI updates to Docs. However, there's one long-requested feature that continues to escape the web application's repertoire.
Introduction
Google's word processor seamlessly bridges different host platforms, but one feature missing from the web version exposes a divide between platforms. Dark mode is present on mobile but missing on the web version, making it a glaring omission that requires simple workarounds.
Official Routes
Google began to make dark mode available to Docs on mobile in 2020. You can find dark mode via Menu > Settings > Theme on Android or iOS, where you can choose Dark, Light or System Default.
Official Routes
Unfortunately, you won't find this range of brightness options on the website. Google offers a single in-house workaround via Chrome's experimental features by searching chrome://flags and accessing "Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents." However, these features are experimental and could compromise browser data and device security.
Dark mode on Google Docs via browser extensions
There are ways of accessing dark mode without risky experimental toggles by using browser extensions such as Google Docs Dark Mode in the Chrome Web Store or alternatives like DocsAfterDark on Firefox.
A free download of these browser extensions will automatically activate dark mode in Google Docs. Clicking the extensions icon allows users to select color themes, tweak individual contrast and brightness settings, and automatically disable dark mode for prints.
