Meta wants people to build their own Muse gadgets, too

The company created its own smart home device, the Muse Home Link

Open Source Initiative

Meta is encouraging developers to create their own Muse-powered devices through a new open-source project called Muse Gadgets. This initiative follows the introduction of the tamagotchi-like Muse Charm AI device, with Meta also launching its own smart home gadget, the Muse Home Link, as an example.

Nat Friedman, head of product for Meta's superintelligence labs, stated that Meta is providing open-source firmware and a Linux SDK to integrate their AI agent with various hardware. Suggested gadget forms include E Ink displays, HDMI dongles for TVs, or small touchscreen accessories similar to the Muse Charm. The platform is designed to be flexible, allowing tinkerers to connect the agent to other devices. Meta has also established a dedicated Discord community for the project.

Introducing Muse Home Link

Meta has developed its own gadget, the Muse Home Link, described as a USB-C powered device that enables Muse to connect to a home network. This allows it to communicate with smart home devices such as TVs and speakers, or any other device that exposes HTTPS. Meta manufactured a batch of 5,000 Home Links.

The Muse Home Link is a dongle that Meta is distributing 5,000 units of to Muse subscribers. Friedman explained it as a small USB-C powered device that connects Muse to a home network, facilitating communication with smart home devices like TVs and speakers via HTTPS.

Future Outlook

The long-term scope of this initiative remains unclear, but Meta hopes that creations by hobbyists will help inform the company's future hardware development. CEO Mark Zuckerberg previously introduced the Muse Charm, positioning it as an alternative for users who prefer interacting with their AI agent without wearing Meta's smart glasses.
