Neon will make a truly open-source SCP movie after A24 controversy
The horror anthology movie is set to arrive in theaters in 2027.
Community Relations
Hollywood is increasingly turning to internet lore for story ideas, with recent adaptations drawing from web series creators. Studios are now exploring the horror fiction site SCP Foundation, highlighting both positive and negative community engagement.
A24 previously drew criticism when it announced an SCP Foundation-based project without contacting the SCP Wiki team or committing to release it under the required open-source license, prompting warnings from administrators.
In contrast, distributor Neon adopted a different strategy for its upcoming anthology film based on the community's horror fiction. Neon contacted the SCP Wiki admin team and pledged to release the project under the Creative Commons ShareAlike license.
The film aims to highlight emerging filmmakers and creators from the SCPF community. While staff members are not directly involved in production or compensation, the project respects the foundational rules of the community.
Wiki Response
The SCP Foundation Wiki admin team praised Neon for its communication and commitment to the licensing requirements and collaborative spirit of the project, while remaining open to discussing compliance options with other studios.
Background on SCP
Established in 2008, the SCP Wiki centers on a fictional organization that catalogs dangerous supernatural objects and entities, each documented with unique pages and designations ranging from anomalous statues to infinite dimensional spaces.
