NVIDIA's controversial DLSS 5 is coming to RTX Remix to enhance older games
The NVIDIA modding platform lets you remaster classic games with modern graphics.
NVIDIA's DLSS 5 launched with NBA 2K27, drawing mixed reactions from the gaming community regarding its neural rendering techniques.
With DLSS 5 now hitting its RTX Remix software, NVIDIA clearly wants modders to start injecting the tech into older games. While some critics argue it alters original artistic intent, others explore its utility through third-party apps and evaluate the performance impact.

DLSS 5 comes to RTX Remix
NVIDIA's RTX Remix tool has been available for free since early 2024. This modding platform allows users to add ray tracing and AI-upscaled textures to older titles, and DLSS 5 is being added to this software. The technology is also coming to RTX Spark, NVIDIA's new SoC.
The tech, which alters in-game character lighting, will also be officially added to Hogwarts Legacy. Promotional screens indicate the visual adjustments have been slightly refined since initial reveals.
Unlike previous generations of DLSS, this version negatively impacts frame rates rather than boosting them. Gamers looking to test the tech can also use third-party tools to inject it into unsupported titles.

How to install DLSS 5 in any game
Following early leaks from NBA 2K27, community-built applications like DLSS 5 Manager and DLSS 5 Swapper allow users with NVIDIA RTX GPUs to inject neural rendering into various Vulkan and DirectX titles.
The software automatically scans drives for compatible games, allowing users to install necessary DLL files and Reshade configurations with a single click, or restore original files if needed.
However, DLSS 5 mods generally do not function with games utilizing strict anti-cheat software, such as BattlEye, which currently prevents modified titles from launching.

Is it true that DLSS 5 looks horrible?
Many gamers feel the technology compromises artistic integrity by drastically altering lighting in thousands of titles at the touch of a button.
Critics point out the heavy performance cost, often slashing frame rates by 50 percent or more, leading to ongoing debates about its practical value.
Testing in titles like Cyberpunk 2077, Control, and various remakes shows noticeable transformations on character facial details, which some users prefer despite the controversy.
Because environmental lighting changes are subtle and the performance penalty is high, users may prefer enabling the feature primarily in games where character close-ups are frequent.

How much does DLSS 5 affect FPS?
Initial third-party apps caused severe performance drops of 30 to 60 percent, though subsequent updates have optimized performance, reducing drops to around 25 percent at 1440p in NBA 2K27.
Testing on high-end hardware like an RTX 5090 shows improved frame rates following driver updates, though performance remains significantly lower than running games natively without DLSS 5 enabled.
Due to its high GPU requirements and divisive visual changes, DLSS 5 remains a feature targeted primarily at enthusiasts with cutting-edge hardware rigs.
