OpenAI Models Aim to Help Banks Migrate Legacy COBOL Systems
OpenAI reports that its artificial intelligence models have improved significantly in handling COBOL and other legacy programming languages.
Legacy Systems and Modernization
OpenAI highlights that approximately 40 percent of the world's banks still rely on COBOL infrastructure. Migrating these systems to modern languages typically requires significant financial investment and time. Furthermore, as programmers familiar with legacy languages retire, financial institutions face mounting pressure to modernize their infrastructure.
Benchmarking and Evaluation
To address coding model limitations in older languages, OpenAI developed MultiLangBench, an evaluation suite testing database engine creation across 20 languages. Results showed substantial performance improvements across iterations, though COBOL remains a complex challenge.
Migration Accuracy and Behavior Preservation
Testing also focused on translating COBOL programs into languages such as C++, Java, Kotlin, Python, and Rust while maintaining original program behaviors, including exact numeric rounding and missing record handling. Certain model configurations achieved high accuracy rates under rigorous reasoning conditions.
OpenAI notes that successful migration demands strict test compliance, particularly for financial applications. Production deployment still necessitates comprehensive expert review and validation against established business logic and dependencies.
