Google stuck to its guns this year and produced the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, a device quite similar in form factor to last year’s foldable while competitors experiment with alternative layouts.

The changes involve a lighter design, a brighter display, better wireless charging, and an updated camera sensor. The new olive color adds a subtle aesthetic bonus, though the device might primarily appeal to dedicated Pixel fans.

Using the device proves enjoyable thanks to competent cameras and a pleasant screen, despite the persistence of a very visible display crease.

Design

The Pixel 11 Pro Fold measures 5mm thick when unfolded, down from 5.2mm on the previous model, and 10.1mm thick when folded compared to 10.8mm previously. While these reductions register on the spec sheet, the phone is not as thin as some competing models.

The new device is also 19 grams lighter than its predecessor, though the difference is barely noticeable for users switching from other foldables.

Google claims durability has been increased by three times compared to the previous generation, aided by a new glass-ceramic cover and a glass-fiber composite back cover designed to absorb impacts.

A strong hinge prevents users from unfolding the phone with one hand, which is an intentional design choice.

The outer display is slightly larger and features a 3,600-nit peak brightness rating, an upgrade from last year's 3,000-nit panel, improving outdoor visibility in bright lighting conditions.

The foldable still features a very visible crease that becomes more pronounced in bright light.

The rear panel features the HiLight indicator, which illuminates for calls from favorite contacts and during hands-free interactions with Gemini.

Software and AI

Multitasking allows two apps to run side by side. While Google-optimized apps like Gmail effectively utilize the split view, some third-party apps like Slack still lack proper adaptation for the expanded screen.

As developer ecosystems evolve, Android foldables continue to face challenges with app layout consistency on expanded displays.

Floating window bubbles and taskbar minimization provide a convenient way to access apps temporarily without launching full-sized windows.

Gemini integration includes timely suggestions via Magic Cue and features that assist with replying to messages and taking notes without requiring a wide keyboard.

Camera

Although the Pixel 11 Pro Fold includes competent cameras, they do not match the imaging capabilities found on the standard Pixel Pro slab models.

Improvements include an updated 48-megapixel main sensor that captures more light and detail, alongside support for up to 30x Super Res Zoom.

The telephoto and ultrawide sensors remain similar to last year's hardware, offering minimal changes for images captured using those lenses.

Software additions include Looks presets for altering image tones and Magic Capture for extracting optimal frames from video footage.

Price

Priced at $1,899, the Pixel 11 Pro Fold positions itself alongside competing wide-format devices such as the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8.

Google's foldable faces significant competition in international markets as other manufacturers introduce new foldable hardware.
