Reddit Will Require Users to Log In Amid Declining Search Traffic
The company is starting with tests outside of the US.
Reddit will no longer allow users without an account to view content on its platform, according to CEO Steve Huffman. The change, initially being tested in select international markets, comes as search traffic has experienced a noticeable decline.
Audience Retention Strategy
Shifting the platform to a logged-in experience aims to retain new audiences and ensure users can find relevant content and communities more effectively, Huffman noted in a shareholder letter.
This operational shift represents a major change for the platform as it addresses AI scraping and evolving internet search dynamics. Huffman acknowledged it is a significant transition necessary for the business.
Requiring accounts provides better data signals for advertising and generally increases engagement while helping protect access to platform data and adapt to global regulations.
While age verification laws were not explicitly mentioned, mandatory logins could assist with compliance for such regulations.
The company is still determining when unauthenticated visitors will encounter a hard login prompt, balancing accessibility from shared links and search results.
Impact of AI Search
Huffman criticized current online search models and AI overviews, stating that AI modes do not drive meaningful traffic to external platforms the way traditional search engines once did.
Recent quarterly reports indicated that search referrals dropped by over one million each week during the month of October.
Reddit maintains a complex relationship with Google, including a data licensing agreement for AI training valued at roughly $60 million annually, with active discussions underway regarding future terms.
Future Product Changes
Additional updates are being considered to improve user engagement, including structural adjustments to the main feed to provide more consistency.
The platform is also exploring a potential private browsing or incognito mode to address user retention behaviors on mobile devices.
