Hardware Compatibility Questions

It remains unclear if the machine learning-based upscaling will run on existing handheld consoles or require newly released hardware, as the rollout coincides with plans for FSR4-capable chips.

“We will expand the machine learning AI-based FSR4 technology, which was first introduced to existing external graphics cards, to the entire product line including APUs, gaming laptops, and handheld devices by the end of this year,” Huynh told Korean publication The Elec. “We plan to respond in two directions: launching existing APUs and new product lines.”

Reports indicate that both a new APU and a lightweight FSR 4 model for APUs are planned, though hardware requirements for specific handheld models are still unconfirmed.

Compute Requirements

Previous statements from AMD executives suggest that sufficient compute power within a product is required for FSR 4 to function properly, which may limit support on older processors.

Industry Adoption

Valve has confirmed it is working with AMD to bring FSR 4 to console-grade APUs, though official support for Steam Deck handheld hardware has not yet been finalized.

AMD did not immediately respond to a request for clarification regarding the rollout details.
