The Classic and Retail Divide

World of Warcraft Forever has achieved notable success, widening the existing divide between the Retail and Classic versions of the game while some developers at Blizzard remain firm on their approach.

Blizzard world builder Matthew Armstrong outlined his design philosophy in a social media post, stating he is creating WoW Forever for the classic gamer and the millions whose accounts lapsed because they disliked modern changes.

This stance follows another developer's decision not to include shared tagging, highlighting Blizzard's effort to provide new content for Classic players without adding divisive modern quality-of-life features.

Upholding Artistic Vision

Armstrong noted that while working on retail familiar elements would have been faster, he felt a duty to uphold the artistic vision and integrity expected by millions of players.

The debate persists because World of Warcraft Forever introduces improvements like enhanced lighting, controller support, and Undead Paladins that appeal to retail players as well.

Community Response

Armstrong's statements drew mixed community reactions, ranging from criticism over excluding segments of the customer base to gratitude from long-lapsed players who grew tired of the modern gameplay loop.

The discussion unfolds during a limited beta phase capped at level 20, ahead of the full release scheduled for November 4.
