Overview of Marathon Updates
It is no secret that Marathon has faced significant challenges since launching in March 2026, prompting Bungie to develop new game modes aimed at revitalizing the experience.
Following earlier teasers and an experimental Vault Breaker mode, Bungie announced plans to retain the original extraction modes while introducing a team deathmatch option and Destiny-inspired PvE modes. The company is also expanding the Perimeter tutorial level into a full-scale zone.
The updates aim to reduce friction for newcomers and provide familiar gameplay loops, theoretically allowing players to gradually transition into the divisive traditional extraction mode.

Roadmap and Release Schedule
New content will roll out gradually, beginning with a Nightfall refresh in October. A Symbiosis update scheduled for December will introduce Marathon's first permanent PvE mode and Team Deathmatch, with further details expected closer to launch.
Marking the game's one-year anniversary in March, a larger update will connect the various gameplay modes and introduce a revised onboarding experience featuring a giant Tick Queen.
Future Plans and Destiny's Return
Alongside the Marathon updates, Bungie is returning focus to Destiny, beginning with the restoration of vaulted content to Destiny 2. Developer Poria Torkan emphasized the studio's long-term commitment to the franchise, stating that Destiny remains the foundation of the studio.
