Leaked Footage Overview
New footage of Xbox’s canceled Perfect Dark reboot has appeared online via a VFX developer’s portfolio. The video highlights destructible environments, sci-fi weaponry, and early mechanics.
Developer The Initiative shut down before releasing its first major project. The studio, established in 2018, collaborated with Crystal Dynamics, which also faced staff layoffs following the cancellation.

Gameplay and Mechanics
The footage reveals developers testing weaponry in greybox levels alongside more polished environments. Traversal featured parkour mechanics, and tests demonstrated reactive environments and detailed destruction physics.
The short clip was compiled as a professional portfolio piece emphasizing explosions, weapon behavior, and environmental visual effects.
Previously, Joanna Dark voice actress Alix Wilton Regan noted that the project was fairly advanced in development, mentioning that entire chapters of the universe had been completed.
Industry Context
According to reports, a deal to rescue the project nearly materialized with Rockstar parent company Take-Two expressing interest in financing the game before negotiations fell through. Additionally, Doom developer id Software had considered pitches for the franchise.
This title would have marked the first entry in the franchise since Rare released Perfect Dark Zero as an Xbox 360 launch title in 2005. Rare's project Everwild was also canceled alongside Perfect Dark.
Last month, Halo Studios also experienced layoffs, with the franchise subsequently assigned to Activision for future development.
Hellblade developer Ninja Theory is also closing down amid sweeping organizational changes under Microsoft's recent restructuring.
Xbox has restructured several internal studios, moving World's Edge and Rare under the Activision division, while Obsidian operates under Bethesda.
