The Future of RE Engine

Capcom’s upcoming projects might feature heavy themes regarding the dangers of artificial intelligence, but the studio is embracing the technology for its internal workflows. During the Capcom Open Conference RE: 2026, programmer Satoshi Ishida detailed the REX Project, aimed at evolving the RE Engine for next-generation hardware. Ishida addressed the scaling challenges of massive titles like Resident Evil, proposing AI integration as a primary solution to streamline development.

Incremental Integration

While the company has previously stated it avoids using generative AI for final in-game assets, Ishida's presentation suggests the technology will play an increasing role behind the scenes to boost efficiency.

The studio's roadmap involves incrementally transforming the RE Engine into an AI-generation development platform, working toward a long-term goal of collaborative creation between developers and artificial intelligence systems.
