The Controversy Over Steam AI Policies
Epic Games boss Tim Sweeney spent the weekend doubling down on his severe criticism of Valve, calling Steam’s AI content disclosure a political act.
The majority owner of Epic is focused heavily on artificial intelligence, having recently triggered a major pivot of the company to retool for maximum AI acceleration, Sweeney said. Epic competes with Gabe Newell’s Valve, with the Epic Games Store continuing to challenge Steam’s dominant position in the PC gaming market.
Sweeney criticized Steam’s AI content disclosure policy, which requires developers to disclose the use of artificial intelligence in creating content shipped with a game and consumed by players. This rule covers artwork, sound, narrative, and localization, though it excludes efficiency gains through backend tool usage.
On Friday, Sweeney criticized Valve’s policy, arguing that forcing developers to issue public statements exposes them to backlash. This perspective generated considerable debate online, with various developers and community members arguing that Valve was simply providing transparency requested by customers.
David Goldfarb, founder of developer The Outsiders, noted that consumers retain the right to know what they are purchasing. He suggested that standard game purchases continue regardless of AI utilization and questioned characterizing consumer feedback as organized hostility.
Social Media Backlash
Sweeney defended his stance across multiple social media posts, comparing AI disclosures to mandatory political essays or requirements to declare personal voting history.
When challenged on consumer preferences, the Epic executive maintained his comparison between Steam's requirements and political affiliation disclosures.
Sweeney argued that forcing developers to list political or technological stances negatively impacts the gaming ecosystem, though his remarks faced widespread skepticism from observers.
Sweeney further claimed that Valve damages developer revenue through policies that he characterizes as coordinated public campaigns, creating tangible economic consequences for studios.
He added that numerous users express a strong desire for mandatory disclosures from creators, often taking it upon themselves to highlight this information within user reviews.
According to Sweeney, the primary function of these disclosures is to influence public perception and impact game revenues, which he views as a restriction on adopting productive technologies.
