A New Chapter in Gaming

Former NFL coach Mike Tomlin spent 19 seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers and won Super Bowl LXIII, and now he's added another major accomplishment to his resume: becoming a Minecraft content creator.

The former coach launched his new YouTube channel, revealing that his love for architecture and family inspired him to work on an expansive Minecraft city over the course of 12 years.

Twelve or 13 years ago, when his children were in middle school, they spent their weekends playing Minecraft. Intrigued by what could hold their attention for such long periods, Tomlin decided to investigate the game.

While he admitted he lacked the precise control required for Survival mode, he found enjoyment in Creative mode, where Mojang's sandbox mechanics clicked with his interests.

Drawing from a lifelong interest in architecture, he began building his creative city as a way to spend time with his children, who contributed their own buildings to the project.

As his kids grew older and moved on to high school and college, their interest in Minecraft faded. For Tomlin, however, the project continued to grow, eventually becoming a therapeutic outlet after 12 years of development.

Inside the 12-Year Virtual City

During a virtual tour, Tomlin showcased a blocky blue pond surrounded by detailed structures, including a hotel featuring a fully fleshed-out interior with a lobby, ballroom, pool, and labeled rooms designed with precise lighting considerations.

He noted that his architectural inspirations came from real-world locations he visited, which he would return home to recreate in the game.

Tomlin also recreated off-campus university housing inspired by memories from dropping his son Dino off at college, incorporating specific floor plans and color schemes near various bodies of water within the game world.

Following his departure as the Steelers' head coach in January 2026, the videos offer a look into how he has spent some of his time during his downtime from professional football.

"I'm obsessed why is he genuinely a better builder than me," content creator @Krtzyy said.

"Mike Tomlin becoming a Minecraft YouTuber was not on my bingo card for 2026," one X/Twitter user said.

Tomlin signed off by promising to share more detailed looks at his city in upcoming videos, teasing additional projects for future uploads.
