Release Date Shift
God of War Laufey will no longer be released in February, as Sony Santa Monica has pushed it back to May 2027.
The game will now be released on May 20, 2027, with the studio stating that it needs more time to make something that meets fan expectations. The studio also confirmed it would share more details on the game soon. It's possible we'll see something at The Game Awards, but there could also be a new State of Play before the end of the year or very early 2027 that may reveal more about the next God of War game.

Industry Context
God of War Laufey had previously been slated to release on February 16, 2027. This window has become exceptionally crowded, especially after some games like Fable pivoted from a fall 2026 release to early 2027 to avoid the blast zone of GTA 6. This will not only give God of War some space to breathe, but also other games that may not be as high on the priority list for gamers compared to a new first-party PlayStation game.
Fan Expectations and Criticism
God of War Laufey has been met with a lot of skepticism and criticism from some gamers, partially due to the fact Kratos has been sidelined as the main character. As a result, it will be important for Santa Monica Studio to be on their A-game and deliver something exceptional. If there's anything that falls short of expectations, the internet will ruthlessly pick it apart, regardless of it's actually fair to do so.
The decision to delay the game must have been made relatively recently, as the studio had just announced a collector's box that was designed to coincide with the game's release date in February. It's unclear if that collector's box will be delayed as well, as it doesn't include the game and therefore is just a box of merch.
Laufey's Role and Franchise Future
God of War Laufey will be one of the biggest games of 2027, as it will continue the story Sony Santa Monica set in motion back in 2018. Although Laufey is the protagonist, it is expected to overlap and connect back to the last two games, with Kratos also having a role in the new game. It's unclear what kind of larger implications and ramifications God of War Laufey will have on this universe, but it seems like a pretty significant expansion of the franchise. A new Kratos-led God of War game is also actively in the works.
