AI Game Creation Platform

Google has announced Playground, a new browser-based platform designed for building custom games from AI prompts. The platform is launching in the United States for users aged 18 and older.

Google Introduces Playground for AI-Driven Game Development

Google Playground functions as a browser-based tool aimed at allowing users to produce playable games entirely through conversational AI prompts.

Features and Controls

The company positions the service as an experimental gaming platform that lowers creation barriers by eliminating the need for traditional coding knowledge. Through a conversational interface, creators can build a game from a blank canvas, modify starter templates, or use guided support. Users can adjust physics, rewrite rules, customize characters, and alter environments dynamically via text instructions.

Sharing and Multiplayer

Once completed, creations can be shared via direct links or published to the Playground Explore gallery for public access. Specific genres will support multiplayer functionality and in-house leaderboards, while the gallery highlights popular titles based on ratings and user engagement.

Under the Hood

The platform is free to access, though Google One subscribers receive higher weekly token allowances depending on their specific subscription tier. Underlying technology combines Google foundational models such as Gemini, Nano Banana, and Lyria with a custom harness optimized through internal testing.

Unity Spark Integration

Alongside Playground, Google and Unity revealed Unity Spark, a professional-grade game development engine that facilitates collaborative creation. Games developed using Unity Spark remain fully compatible with the Playground ecosystem. A closed beta test for Spark is scheduled to begin later this year.

Google's release follows similar moves across the industry, including Meta's introduction of AI game-building tools for the web and mobile Horizon platform, alongside Roblox testing its own AI creation features.
