Preorder Success

Analytics firm Sensor Tower estimates that Grand Theft Auto 6 has already generated over $750 million in preorders across PlayStation 5 and Xbox platforms.

With its launch just two weeks away, GTA 6 is poised to be one of the most anticipated video game releases and a significant pop culture event of the decade.

The immense excitement for Rockstar’s open-world action-adventure franchise is evident, with fans demonstrating their enthusiasm through substantial preorder commitments. Sensor Tower's aggregated data indicates that Rockstar has already secured three-quarters of a billion dollars from preorders alone.

Sales Breakdown

As of November 3, an estimated 7.71 million units have been sold, accumulating $751 million in revenue. The console split shows a significant preference for PlayStation, accounting for 74% of preorders compared to Xbox's 26%.

This translates to approximately $559 million in revenue from PlayStation preorders and $192 million from Xbox, highlighting Rockstar's substantial financial success even before the game's official release.

Comparing to GTA 5

For context, Grand Theft Auto 5 earned $800 million within its first 24 hours and reached $1 billion in three days, setting a record as the fastest entertainment product to achieve that milestone. Given current preorder trends, GTA 6 has the potential to surpass this record once it launches on November 19.

Pricing Strategy

The high sales figures are likely influenced by consumers opting for the $100 Ultimate Edition over the standard version. Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive (Rockstar's parent company), suggested in an August interview that this trend reflects the purchasing habits of the most eager consumers who preorder early.

The Standard Edition of GTA 6 is priced at $80, which Zelnick described as a "bargain" that reflects the game's inherent value.

Zelnick stated, "We aim always to deliver vastly more value than what we charge. And we think that price point allows us to do just that. And then of course we have a premium opportunity for people who want to avail themselves of that. And even that one, again, we think is priced in a way so as to deliver much more value than what we're charging."

He further elaborated that "the real cost of a AAA video game is a whole lot lower today than it was 20 years ago. Pricing has not kept pace with inflation. And our goal is to continue to over-deliver for our consumers, because how you feel about any experience is the intersection of the experience itself and what you pay for it. So to say that we expect that Grand Theft Auto 6 will be an incredible bargain as experiences go is a gross understatement, because Rockstar Games is known for over-delivering."
