Gaming Favorites

Francis Lawrence, director of Netflix’s upcoming BioShock movie, recently shared insight into his favorite video games of all time.

Lawrence is widely known for directing multiple entries in the Hunger Games franchise, most recently working on the upcoming prequel film Sunrise on the Reaping, scheduled for theaters this November.

With the live-action BioShock adaptation finally moving forward at Netflix after years in development, Lawrence reflected on the titles that shaped his gaming habits.

Reflecting on his past favorites, Lawrence noted that Metal Gear Solid, BioShock, Call of Duty, and the original top-down Grand Theft Auto were among the standout titles he enjoyed playing.

Release Window Clash

When discussing the massive anticipation surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6, Lawrence acknowledged the tricky timing of the blockbuster game launching near his own cinematic release.

Joking about the potential box office competition, Lawrence suggested that audiences could easily balance both entertainment mediums by playing the game and seeing the movie.

Behind the BioShock Movie

Development on the BioShock film adaptation spans well over a decade, with previous iterations involving filmmakers like Gore Verbinski and Guillermo del Toro before landing with Lawrence.

Previous directors attached to the project encountered creative differences with rights holders and studio executives before the current adaptation efforts took shape.

Beyond BioShock, Lawrence is also preparing to direct a film adaptation of Peirce Brown's science-fiction book series Red Rising, which has recently secured a home at Paramount.
