Wolverine Physical Sales
According to retail data, 35% of Marvel’s Wolverine sales were physical discs. This comes from Ampere Analysis, which tracks sales data across major markets globally.
The data suggests Wolverine shifted 2.16 million units in September after launching on September 15, with a significant portion sold on-disc. In Europe, 51% of Wolverine sales came from the boxed version. More than two-thirds were physical sales in France, while two-thirds were digital in the UK.
Industry Shifts and Preservation
The figures arrive as Sony plans to phase out physical disc production for PlayStation by 2028, sparking online backlash and calls for a policy reversal from physical media preservation advocates.
The Video Game History Foundation noted that if platform owners eliminate physical media and older digital storefronts, trade groups should offer meaningful solutions for archives and museums to legally preserve digital-only content for research.
Former PlayStation head Shawn Layden previously questioned the decision to drop discs, noting that while downloads represent the vast majority of purchases, the remaining physical buyers often comprise the most dedicated segment of the player base.
Sony acknowledged strong community views on the issue in July but maintained its stance. Meanwhile, other upcoming releases like GTA 6 are slated to skip physical discs entirely, utilizing box codes instead.
September Chart Performance
Insomniac’s superhero title ranked as the second best-selling game on PS5 in September, trailing EA Sports FC 27, which sold nearly 5 million copies on PS5 and 1.65 million on Xbox.
Other titles such as How to Fish and Wardogs outperformed Wolverine when factoring in PC platforms, with Wardogs nearing 3 million sales driven by strong word of mouth and combat sandbox clips.
Ampere’s data indicated slower starts for other September releases, including 305,000 sales on PS5 for Control: Resonant and 291,000 for Silent Hill: Townfall. Conversely, Rebel Wolves' debut RPG The Blood of Dawnwalker reached 1.8 million sales across all platforms.
