Diablo 5 Outlook
While Diablo 5 was announced at Blizzcon 2026 just a couple weeks ago, the game is currently slated for a spring 2029 release. Former co-founder of Path of Exile developer Grinding Gear Games, Chris Wilson, is tentatively excited for Blizzard's upcoming action RPG.
Wilson released a video analyzing everything Blizzard has announced about the upcoming title, covering story details, itemization, and monster levels. He expressed cautious optimism that the series is moving in the right direction, largely due to the apparent influence of Diablo 2.
Design Philosophy
Wilson praised the new character and inventory screen featuring variable item sizes and stats aligned with Diablo 2. However, he noted that modern conventions like flat weapon DPS choices clash with older design sensibilities, acknowledging that Diablo 2's clunker elements cannot be fully replicated today.
There remains a larger question about alienating modern audiences cultivated over decades. Wilson noted that while a faithful recreation of Diablo 2 would appeal to him personally, it would be difficult to justify such a large investment for a niche audience.
He expects Diablo 5 to bridge the gap as a modern action RPG borrowing heavily from Diablo 2 rather than attempting a complete return to older design philosophies.
Release Expectations
Despite the planned timeline, Wilson suspects the game might face delays, noting that development setbacks are entirely normal for the industry and comparable to his experience with Path of Exile updates.
Diablo 4 Future
Wilson also suggested that the early announcement of Diablo 5 could overshadow Diablo 4, though Blizzard has denied shifting focus away from the current game. Blizzard continues to develop seasonal content and updates for Diablo 4.
While some players have embraced recent anniversary and nostalgic content events, Wilson offered a more critical view, expressing concern over how major prime evil antagonists were introduced in a special event detached from the core narrative.
Blizzard plans to continue supporting Diablo 4 with new seasons and the introduction of the Amazon class from Diablo 2 via a DLC pack. Meanwhile, development on Diablo 5 continues with a promise of more launch classes than any previous entry in the franchise.
