Early Online Plans

Resident Evil Requiem producer Masachika Kawata revealed that the game was originally planned to be an online title before developers scrapped the concept to focus purely on horror.

Kawata shared these details in the Biohazard 30th Special Mook, a comprehensive fan publication detailing the history of the franchise alongside developer interviews.

Game director Koshi Nakanishi initially developed the project as an online game as part of the ongoing trial and error process inherent in game design.

However, unfavorable results from midway research led the team to abandon the online direction and prioritize the core horror experience.

Character Selection

Kawata also disclosed that Leon was selected as the initial protagonist, but the team felt his combat proficiency leaned too heavily into action rather than fear.

Because a combat-heavy lead diminished the horror elements, developers decided to introduce Grace as a new character.

Capcom intentionally withheld Leon's involvement until late in the promotional cycle to maintain audience interest leading up to release.

Company Pressure

Early multiplayer plans for major entries align with past corporate pushes at Capcom for multiplayer features and microtransactions during conceptual phases.

Franchise producer Jun Takeuchi previously noted that marketing pressures routinely demanded online service elements and downloadable content across projects.

Multiplayer concepts were ultimately discarded when viable gameplay ideas failed to materialize, resulting in a traditional single-player horror focus.

Future Projects

Capcom continues active development across the Resident Evil franchise as the survival horror series remains prominent.
