Free Upgrade Method
The Witcher 3 Remastered can be unlocked on Switch 2 for free via any physical version of the game for Switch, whether it is your own copy or not.
Switch 2 owners have discovered that physical cartridges for The Witcher 3 on Switch can be used an unlimited number of times to grant a digital copy of The Witcher 3 Remastered. Players can rent or borrow a copy to unlock unlimited access, and the original cartridge does not need to remain inserted after unlocking.
Gamers can borrow a copy from a friend or utilize second-hand game shops to secure access to the digital upgrade without purchasing a dedicated physical copy.
CD Projekt Red Update
This upgrade path follows CD Projekt's commitment to providing free upgrades for the RPG classic across platforms for physical owners. The original Switch lacks a dedicated remastered version, but the legacy cartridge triggers the free upgrade for Switch 2 hardware.
Remaster Enhancements
The remaster introduces combat improvements, upgraded traversal mechanics, revamped mount handling, enhanced monster behaviors, skill tree adjustments, armor transmog, an expanded photo mode, and new combat finishers.
Additional updates include cross-platform mod support, quest tracking, immersive meditation, refined animations, interface refinements, looting reworks, and technical additions like ray-tracing and global lighting improvements.
Upcoming Content
These updates precede the planned Songs of the Past expansion scheduled for next year, which will require a separate purchase. The remastered edition bundles the base game alongside its first two major expansions.
Players jumping into the upgraded version can explore integrated base game content and expansions as part of the unified Remastered package.
