Initial Clarification
Xbox Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball has clarified that Grand Theft Auto VI will not be streaming to PC upon its launch via the cloud, refuting an earlier report that Xbox would be the exclusive platform for cloud streaming at launch.
Ball stated, "While the excitement for GTA VI and Xbox is great to see, it has also led to some misreporting. We are looking forward to launching GTA VI on Xbox November 19, though the game will not be streaming exclusively or to PC."
The Original Report
The clarification followed an earlier report suggesting that Xbox had secured exclusive cloud streaming rights for GTA 6, which would have made the game playable on PC at launch through cloud services.
The Verge had initially reported that Xbox would be the sole platform for streaming GTA 6 via the cloud at launch. This report highlighted that Xbox's cloud streaming service is accessible on various devices, including PCs, smart TVs, and mobile devices, without requiring an Xbox console. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma was also reported to have mentioned plans for a unique GTA 6 initiative during a company town hall.
Implications for PC Gamers
According to the initial report, the alleged deal would have commenced with the game's November release. If accurate, this would have offered PC players a cloud-based option to play GTA 6, serving as a temporary solution before a native PC port, albeit without PC-specific performance, modding, or other features.
Microsoft has recently adjusted Game Pass streaming hours, and The Verge also noted the upcoming introduction of pay-as-you-go plans in November. These plans could theoretically allow users to pay for timed streaming access to GTA 6 without owning a console.
Market Context and Competition
The initial report emerged amidst other discussions, including The Verge's earlier report about Xbox's alleged concerns regarding GTA 6 pre-order numbers on its platform. Xbox CSO Matthew Ball had previously refuted these claims, stating that the game was achieving record-breaking pre-orders, aligning with Xbox's console market share.
In a competitive move, PlayStation secured marketing rights for GTA 6, resulting in limited-edition DualSense controllers. Rockstar has also highlighted that game footage was captured on PS5 hardware, promoting the PS5 version with unique features and branding suggesting it will "play best" on the console.
The reported streaming initiative was seen as Xbox's strategy to directly compete with PlayStation for GTA 6, potentially offering a significant advantage given current console availability and cost challenges, especially for casual gamers.
