ICANN Opens New Domain Applications
The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, known as ICANN, is accepting applications for new top-level domains, representing the suffixes at the end of web addresses.
Tech Giants Target AI Domain Names
The latest batch of top-level domain applications submitted to ICANN heavily features artificial intelligence themes.
Competition for AI Suffixes
ICANN announced 1,615 applications submitted by 481 applicants. Ten companies, including Meta and OpenAI, applied for the .agent domain. Seven applicants requested .agi, while six applied for .asi. Four companies requested .intelligence, and Meta sought .superintelligence. OpenAI applied for a total of 15 top-level domains, and Meta requested 21.
Generic and Branded Domains
The applications comprise two primary categories: generic terms available for broad use, and purely branded suffixes dedicated to specific corporate ecosystems.
Brand-Specific Applications
There are 345 brand applications in the current batch. Meta applied for suffixes like .facebook, .instagram, and .threads. OpenAI requested .chatgpt, .codex, and .openai, while Anthropic submitted applications for .anthropic and .claude.
The Outlook for Alternate Suffixes
While alternate top-level domains have faced adoption challenges outside of standard suffixes like .com, a significant push by major brands indicates renewed corporate interest in custom domain architecture.
The application review process is ongoing, with official approvals expected next year. The high level of interest from major firms demonstrates the enduring value of distinct domain naming in the digital landscape.
