AWS's Trillion-Dollar Ambition
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has consistently stated his belief that AWS can achieve a trillion dollars in annual revenue, a goal he reaffirmed during the company's recent quarterly earnings call.
Jassy emphasized the unprecedented scale of Amazon's current endeavors, noting that a business with a trillion dollars in annual revenue would be a historic achievement.
Massive Capital Investment Required
Achieving this revenue milestone for AWS will necessitate a significant increase in Amazon's capital expenditures to develop the infrastructure required for such expansive growth.
Jassy disclosed that Amazon anticipates approximately $220 billion in cash capital expenditure for 2026, primarily allocated to AWS, with plans for even greater spending in 2027, all with an expectation of strong financial returns.
Investor Concerns and AI-Driven Growth
The substantial investments in AI infrastructure have raised concerns among investors, prompting Wall Street analysts to question Jassy about the rationale behind the spending, the indicators of future growth, and projected profit margins.
Jassy defended the expenditure, asserting that it is a strategic move to leverage a historic surge in global cloud demand, largely propelled by artificial intelligence. AWS revenue saw a 39% increase year-over-year, marking its sixth consecutive quarter of consistent growth.
The CEO further projected a 40% growth rate for AWS not only for the upcoming year but also for 2028.
Jassy highlighted AWS's current $184 billion annualized revenue run-rate, emphasizing the immense remaining opportunity. He expressed confidence that with ongoing innovation, new AI capabilities, and increasing capacity, AWS can sustain over 40% growth in both 2027 and 2028, reaching a trillion-dollar revenue within five to ten years.
He also noted that enterprise AI adoption is still in its nascent stages, indicating that Amazon's current strategy is proving effective.
A Once-in-a-Lifetime Opportunity
When pressed on the substantial investment in AWS, Jassy described the AI boom as an unparalleled "once in a lifetime opportunity" justifying the significant financial commitment.
He affirmed Amazon's commitment to investing in leadership, stating that this plan is fundable and will fundamentally transform Amazon's size and revenue.
Market Reaction
Despite Jassy's assurances, investors remained apprehensive, with Amazon's shares declining approximately 6% in after-market trading on Thursday.
The AI boom presents a dual dynamic for the cloud industry, as AI services rely heavily on cloud infrastructure. Other major cloud providers, such as Microsoft, are also investing heavily while reporting substantial revenue growth from their cloud operations.
