Introduction to Canva Craft

Canva is diving even deeper into artificial intelligence with the launch of an image generation model that competes directly with tools from OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google. The model, called Canva Craft, uses a two-stage architecture that allows it to plan a design before generating an image, allowing for greater precision, consistency, and control.

Canva Craft can generate images at up to 2K resolution and in more than 30 aspect ratios.

Capabilities and Training

In addition to generating social media posts and marketing content, it is also intended to create realistic scenes, digital art, and environmental imagery. The model’s two-stage system allows it to more accurately generate complex images that require legible text and precise object placement. Canva trained Craft on millions of human-made templates from its content library, which includes social media posts, presentations, infographics, and menus.

The new AI model builds on Canva’s expansion into artificial intelligence. In April, Canva launched prompt-based editing capabilities that allow users to create or modify a design through text descriptions. The platform also introduced layers to AI-generated images, enabling edits to specific parts of an image while leaving the rest untouched.

Leaderboard Standing

The model is currently ranked fourth on Design Arena’s leaderboard for AI image generation models, a crowdsourced benchmark for design tools, sitting behind OpenAI models.

Safety and Future Plans

Canva notes that its AI model includes robust input and output moderation, privacy and safety controls, and reporting tools. The company plans to allow AI agents to plug into Canva Craft through the open Model Context Protocol, and will roll out faster Craft-fast and Craft-ultrafast variants in the future.

Canva Craft is available globally to all users, accessible by navigating to the menu options and selecting Dream Lab.
