The policy update, originally scheduled for October 30, will now take effect on November 20 to allow additional time for stakeholder discussions.
Meta delays new business terms after publisher pushback on AI scraping
Following backlash from publishers across the globe, Meta is pushing the enforcement of its new terms to November 20th.
Publisher Concerns and Legal Scrutiny
The business terms initially appeared to grant Meta authorization to scrape external websites utilizing its platforms and leverage the extracted material for machine learning development. Although Meta subsequently removed explicit references to model training from the text, legal analysts maintained that the revision left open the possibility for ongoing data harvesting.
Industry and Regulatory Pressure
Industry advocacy groups formally petitioned leadership regarding the potential negative impact on media organizations, while digital advertisers and European and British publishers called upon regional regulators to intervene and suspend the implementation.
Meta's Response
In response to the opposition, the company extended the timeline to clarify its utilization of automated web crawlers and emphasize that content creators retain the ability to manage access through standard exclusion protocols.
