Rapid Growth and Early Adoption

Meta’s AI companion, Muse, has become one of only a dozen mobile apps to reach 10 million U.S. downloads in its first 40 days on the market. Market intelligence provider Sensor Tower reported that Muse achieved 10.9 million total downloads since its September debut, with 10.2 million originating in the United States.

Sensor Tower Senior Insights Analyst Kara Lee noted that only 11 other apps have reached this post-launch milestone, with Meta’s Threads being the most recent non-game addition in July 2023.

Other applications that scaled at a similar pace were predominantly mobile games such as Fortnite, PUBG Mobile, and Pokémon GO, alongside Disney+ as another rare non-gaming entry.

Marketing and Advertising Strategy

Meta’s growth strategy combines cross-promotion across its family of services—which spans 3.6 billion daily active users—with substantial paid advertising investments to drive new user acquisition.

Sensor Tower data indicates Meta allocated 39% of its total advertising budget to market Muse in October, up from 23% in September. The app currently ranks as the 21st largest brand in the U.S. by advertising impressions.

User Retention and Engagement

Beyond initial acquisition, Muse is demonstrating higher user retention rates compared to conversational AI competitors such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok.

In the U.S. market, Muse recorded a 30% retention rate after 7 days and 23% after 14 days. By comparison, rival AI applications averaged a 19% 7-day retention rate and a 16% 14-day retention rate.

Daily active users for Muse reached 2.5 million on October 16, marking a 15% increase week-over-week.

Comparison With Competitors

In terms of early download figures, Muse outperformed several competitors during their respective launch windows. ChatGPT recorded 3.7 million U.S. downloads in its first 40 days, while Grok and Claude reached 500,000 and 200,000 downloads respectively.

Globally, ChatGPT achieved higher initial numbers with around 15 million downloads, though analysts note the comparison differs due to Muse currently being restricted to U.S. and Canadian markets, whereas ChatGPT had a broader global rollout from inception.

Since its launch, Muse has maintained the top position on the U.S. App Store for nearly every day and has similarly held the No. 1 spot on Google Play over the past month.
