Introduction to Mistral Large 4

French AI lab Mistral AI released Mistral Large 4, a new large multimodal model aiming to compete with both American and Chinese rivals as an independent European alternative.

Nicknamed Le Chonk due to its 1 trillion parameters, the model is not currently an open-weight release. It is accessible via a public guardrail endpoint, though Mistral plans to make its weights available in three weeks following safety testing.

Mistral leadership noted that the company is collaborating with trusted partners and government entities to ensure that upcoming open-source weights can be utilized defensively.

Security and Infrastructure

Security considerations have grown increasingly important for enterprise and institutional users, while open-weight availability facilitates independent auditing.

The model was trained entirely on Mistral’s proprietary compute infrastructure using 4,000 Nvidia GPUs, which the company states is significantly fewer than typical requirements for comparable Chinese and closed-source models.

Performance and Use Cases

While comprehensive benchmark results remain pending, Mistral anticipates strong performance among open-weight models and potential advantages in targeted multimodal applications.

Optimized use cases for the model include cybersecurity, finance, and chip design, aligning with backing from strategic investors such as ASML and Samsung.

With the introduction of its high-parameter model, the lab continues to cement its positioning as a frontier artificial intelligence developer.
