OpenAI's Trillion-Dollar Valuation

Reports indicate that OpenAI is nearing completion of another substantial private funding round, opting for this path instead of an immediate initial public offering. The artificial intelligence research company is reportedly seeking to raise up to $30 billion, which would establish a pre-money valuation of $1.25 trillion. Sources cited by CNBC suggest that Coatue and investors from the UAE are leading this significant financial endeavor.

This development follows a similar report from Bloomberg approximately a month prior, which suggested OpenAI was working towards a $30 billion raise at a $1.4 trillion valuation. Both news outlets note that the terms of the deal are still under negotiation and could be subject to change. CNBC further reports that the UAE investment might also include an agreement to secure additional computing capacity for OpenAI from the region. OpenAI has declined to comment on these reports.

IPO Implications and Market Impact

If OpenAI achieves a valuation exceeding $1 trillion with this latest funding, it would set a new benchmark as the most highly valued private company ever. Such a valuation would also significantly raise expectations for OpenAI's eventual IPO. The company confidentially filed paperwork for an IPO in June, following a previous funding round in March that valued the creator of ChatGPT at $852 billion post-money.

This elevated valuation for OpenAI could also have considerable implications for Anthropic's own IPO, which many observers believe is imminent. Unconfirmed reports suggest that Anthropic's public S-1 filing could be released soon. CNBC indicates that Anthropic is reportedly targeting a valuation between $1.5 trillion and $2 trillion for its public market debut. In May, Anthropic secured $65 billion at a $965 billion valuation, a round widely considered at the time to be its final major private raise before an IPO. Anthropic also submitted confidential IPO paperwork in June.
