OpenAI Enters the Decision Model Market
OpenAI made its Decisions API model widely available to users for the first time, entering the market for fast, cheap intelligence that recently made TypeSafe, a startup founded by a former researcher at the frontier lab, a $7.6 billion company.
TypeSafe’s Jev model created a category for deep learning models that act as super classifiers: Given a set of options, they can quickly make choices and offer a confidence rating in their decision. Software developers quickly found that these decision or System One models could replace LLMs in a variety of workflows, operating more quickly and at a dramatically lower cost.
Nikunj Handa, the product lead for OpenAI’s APIs, noted that his team sprinted to offer their own version. Rather than building a specifically calibrated decision model, the team took an existing model and reconfigured it to speed up inference and lower costs.
The main advantage of the Decisions API has been speed, shrinking response times from several seconds down to between 100 and 180 milliseconds, according to product representatives.
Global Availability and Initial Performance
Following an initial introduction, the Decisions API became available to all customers with added voice and visual modalities, alongside geographic optimizations to ensure lower latency globally.
In initial trials, enterprise engineers used the API to replace traditional large language models with higher throughput solutions, significantly cutting response times for applications ranging from AI language tutoring to voice assistants.
Benchmarks and Market Competition
Industry consensus on what constitutes an optimal decision model remains varied, with optimization across intelligence, cost, calibration, and speed depending heavily on the specific workload.
Public benchmarks continue to evaluate various offerings from multiple labs, highlighting a competitive landscape where different architectures excel in distinct indexing metrics.
Alternative testing methods, such as evaluating models on rapid gameplay tasks like Pac-Man, provide additional insights into how quickly these systems can process high-stakes choices in fractions of a second.
Future Capabilities
OpenAI's model may hold an advantage in multi-modality, particularly regarding image classification and calibration, with customers expressing interest in more flexible output handling.
Further increases in processing speed could potentially enable entirely new use cases, such as real-time analysis for individual frames in video feeds.
As these offerings become faster and more affordable, developers anticipate an expanding array of applications that were previously impractical due to latency and cost constraints.
